SYMPTOM/CONDITION

^ The low engine oil level warning message may not be given due to an interference condition that could interrupt the dipstick to dipstick base electrical connection.

^ High dipstick insertion and removal effort may be due to an undersized dipstick tube.


DIAGNOSIS

To determine if the inoperative low engine oil message is related to the dipstick, make sure the dipstick is fully seated in the dipstick base. If not seated, it may be due to interference with the distributor wire shield. Engine vibration may then cause upward movement of the dipstick, opening the contacts, thus preventing the low oil level message.


PARTS REQUIRED

For high dipstick operator effort:

Dipstick Tube PN 4173376
Loctite PN 4318029


REPAIR PROCEDURE

Inoperative Low Engine Oil Level Message (this repair is only applicable to vehicles built before September 2, 1983 - MDH 09-02-XX):

1. Remove dipstick from base.

2. Remove tab from the outside lip of dipstick (Figure 1).

3. Reinstall dipstick in base.

High Operator Effort (this repair is only applicable to vehicles built before September 16, 1983 - MDH 09-16-XX):

1. Remove dipstick from base.

2. Remove dipstick tube.

3. Apply Loctite, PN 4318029, to the outside engine end of new Dipstick Tube, PN 4173376, and install (Figure 2).

4. Reinstall dipstick and base, start engine, and check for leaks.

NOTE: IF CUSTOMER IS STILL DISSATISFIED, THE DIPSTICK AND BASE CAN BE REPLACED WITH MANUAL DIPSTICK PN 4105446. ADVISE CUSTOMERS THEY MUST RELY ON MANUAL OIL LEVEL CHECKS AND OIL INDICATOR LAMP FOR MAINTAINING ENGINE OIL LEVEL AND TO DISREGARD OIL LEVEL MESSAGE DURING MONITOR SYSTEMS CHECK.
