Input Shaft End Play
Input Shaft End Play
Measuring input shaft end play before disassembly will usually indicate when a thrust washer change is required, (except when major parts are replaced). The thrust washer is located between reaction shaft support and front clutch retainer on A-727 transmissions. The thrust washer is located between input and output shafts on A-904 family transmissions.
(1) Attach a dial indicator to transmission bell housing with its plunger seated against end of input shaft (Fig. 5). Move input shaft in and out to obtain end play reading. End play specifications are .022 to .091 inch for A-904 family transmissions, and .034 to .084 inch for A-727 transmissions.
(2) Record indicator reading for reference when reassembling the transmission.
