Removal and Replacement
Brake Drum Replacement
Tools Required
* J 22364-01 Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gage
* J 42450-A Wheel Hub Resurfacing Kit
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution.
1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
3. Remove the rear brake drum retainer.
Important: Before removing the brake drum, apply a small amount of penetrating oil around the wheel studs, axle shaft hub, and brake drum.
4. Remove the rear brake drum.
5. If the brake drum cannot be removed, perform the following.
1. Remove the rubber plug from the backing plate.
2. Insert a screwdriver (2), until contact has been made with the adjuster lever (1).
3. Slightly push the adjuster actuator (4) lever away from the adjuster (1).
4. Using a second screwdriver (2), rotate the adjuster (1) in an upward motion, until the adjuster is seated.
5. Remove the brake drum.
6. Using the J 42450-A, clean the mating surface between the rear axle flange and the brake drum.
Installation Procedure
1. Using the J 22364-01 (1), measure the brake drum.
2. Using the J 22364-01 (1), adjust the rear brake shoes.
3. Install the brake drum.
4. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
5. Lower the vehicle.
