Power Steering Gear Replacement

Removal Procedure

Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.





1. Remove the lower fan shroud.
2. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt from the intermediate shaft coupling.
3. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
4. Place a drain pan under the steering gear.





Important: Cap or tape the ends of the hoses and the gear fittings to prevent spillage and contamination.

5. Disconnect the power brake booster outlet hose from the steering gear.





6. Disconnect the power steering cooler pipe from the steering gear.
7. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
8. Remove the pitman arm from the steering gear.





9. Remove the steering gear mounting bolts and washers.
10. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the steering gear to the vehicle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the steering gear washers and bolts.
- Tighten the power steering gear bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the pitman arm to the steering gear.
4. Lower the vehicle.





5. Connect the power steering cooler pipe to the steering gear.
- Tighten the power steering cooler pipe fitting to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).





6. Connect the power brake booster outlet hose to the steering gear.
- Tighten the power brake booster outlet fitting to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).





7. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
8. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
9. Install the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft coupling.
- Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft coupling to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the lower fan shroud.
11. Bleed the power steering system.
