Front Upper

Upper Control Arm Replacement

- Tools Required
- J 36607 Ball Joint Separator

Removal Procedure





1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Support the lower control arm with safety stands.
3. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.





4. Remove the brake hose bracket retaining nut and bolt.





5. Remove the speed sensor bracket retaining nut and bolt.





6. Remove the upper ball joint cotter pin and retaining nut.





7. Install the J 36607 to the upper ball joint and steering knuckle.
8. Disconnect the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle using J 36607.





9. Remove the upper control arm nuts, the cams, and the mounting bolts.
10. Remove the upper control arm.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the upper control arm to the frame.
2. Install the upper control arm mounting bolts and the cams.
- Make sure the bolt heads are opposed inside the bracket.
- The cam lobes must point down.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Important: Tighten the nuts with the control arm at Z height. Refer to Trim Height Inspection Procedure.

3. Install the new upper control arm nuts.
- Tighten the front nut first, then the rear nut.
- Tighten the upper control arm cam hardware nuts to 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.).





4. Connect the upper ball joint stud to the steering knuckle.
5. Install the upper ball joint retaining nut.
- Tighten the upper ball joint retaining nut to 98 Nm (72 ft. lbs.).
6. Install a new cotter pin.
- Tighten the nut up to an additional 1/6 amount in order to insert the cotter pin through the upper ball joint stud. Bend the cotter pin ends flat against the nut.





7. Install the brake hose bracket retaining nut and bolt.
- Tighten the brake hose bracket retaining nut to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.).





8. Install the speed sensor bracket retaining nut and bolt.
- Tighten the speed sensor bracket retaining nut to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
10. Remove the safety stand from the lower control arm.
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Check the front wheel alignment. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment.
