Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure





1. Ensure the park brake lever is in the released position.
2. Remove the 4 screws (1,3,4,6), the 2 clips (2,5), and lift the console.
3. If the vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect the power neutral switch connector.
4. If the vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary power outlet, disconnect the auxiliary power outlet connector.





5. Disconnect the park brake switch connector (10).





6. Remove the park brake cable lock nut (1).
7. Remove the park brake cables from the equalizer.





8. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
9. Remove the 2 rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
10. Remove the 2 brake drums. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement in Drum Brakes.
11. Turn the shoe hold down pins (1) in order to release the shoe hold down springs (2).
12. Remove the shoe hold down springs.





13. Remove the following components:
^ The upper return spring (1)
^ The strut
^ The adjuster (2)
^ The adjuster lever
^ The adjuster spring (5)
^ The strut spring (3)
^ The pawl lever (6)
14. Remove the lower return spring (4)





15. Disconnect the-park brake cable (3) from the park brake shoe lever.

Important: The color ring on the park brake cable is for identification.

16. Squeeze the park brake cable stopper ring (2) in order to remove the cable (3) from the backing plate (1).
17. Remove the 3 park brake retainer bolts and the 3 park brake retainers.
18. Remove the park brake cable and the grommet from the vehicle.


Installation Procedure





1. Install the park brake cable and the grommet to the vehicle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Secure the park brake cable with the 3 park brake retainers and the 3 park brake retainer bolts.
^ Tighten the park brake retainer bolts to 10 Nm (88.5 inch lbs.).

Important: The color ring on the park brake cable is for identification. Ensure the new park brake cable has the same color on the ring as the old park brake cable.

3. Install the brake cable stopper ring (2) and the park brake cable (3) to the backing plate (1).





4. Install the park brake cable spring (1) and the nipple end (2) to the park brake shoe lever (3).





5. Install the lower return spring (4).
6. Install the following components:
^ The upper return spring (1)
^ The strut
^ The adjuster (2)
^ The adjuster lever
^ The adjuster spring (5)
^ The strut spring (3)
^ The pawl lever (6)





7. Install the shoe hold down springs (2). Turn the shoe hold down pins (1) in order to secure the shoe hold down springs.
8. Install the 2 brake drums. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
9. Install the 2 rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
10. Lower the vehicle.





Important: The equalizer must be within 15° of perpendicular to the park brake lever cable.

11. Install the equalizer (5) to the park brake cable (4). Secure with the pin (6).





12. Install the park brake cable lock nut (1).





13. Connect the park brake switch connector (10).
14. Adjust the park brake lever. Refer to Park Brake Lever Adjustment.





15. Position the console over the shift knob.
16. If the vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary power outlet, connect the auxiliary power outlet connector.
17. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, connect the power neutral switch connector.
18. Install the console. Secure with 4 screws (1,3,4,6) and 2 clips (2,5).
Removal Procedure





1. Ensure the park brake lever is in the released position.
2. Remove the 4 screws (1,3,4,6), the 2 clips (2,5), and lift up the console.
3. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, disconnect the power neutral switch connector.
4. If the vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary power outlet, disconnect the auxiliary power outlet connector.





5. Disconnect the park brake switch connector (10).
