Front Lower

Removal Procedure

Tools Required
- J 23742 Ball Joint Separator





1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with suitable safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Single Front or Rear Wheels) in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
4. Remove the hub and the rotor. Refer to Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement (RWD-All Except C3500HD).
5. Remove the cotter pin and the nut.
6. Separate the ball joint using the J 23742.
7. Disconnect the control arm from the knuckle.
8. Remove the coil spring. Refer to Front Coil Springs Replacement.
9. Remove the nuts from the pivot bolts.
10. Remove the pivot bolts from the lower control arm.
11. Remove the lower control arm.
12. Remove the bushings.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the control arm bushings.
2. Install the control arm to the frame.

Important: The pivot bolts must be installed in the proper direction.

3. Install the pivot bolts and the nuts.
4. Install the coil spring. Refer to Front Coil Springs Replacement.
5. Install the control arm to the steering knuckle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Important: Tighten the nuts of the control arm at the proper Z height. Refer to Trim Height Inspection Procedure in Wheel Alignment.

6. Install the ball joint stud nut.
- Tighten the nuts to 165 Nm (121 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten the ball joint stud nut to 128 Nm (94 ft. lbs.). Tighten the nut by aligning the slot in the stud nut with the hole in the stud.
7. Install a new cotter pin.
8. Install the hub and the rotor. Refer to Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement (RWD-All Except C3500HD).
9. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Single Front or Rear Wheels) in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
10. Remove the safety stands.
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Check the front wheel alignment. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment in Wheel Alignment.
