Pinion Flange: Service and Repair

Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (Output Shaft)

Removal Procedure

Tools Required
* J 7804-A Puller
* J 7804-A Puller

1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Block the wheels.
3. Remove the differential Refer to Differential Replacement Differential Replacement.
4. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to the following procedures:

* Propeller Shaft Replacement - One-Piece - Yoke Type Propeller Shaft Replacement - One-Piece - Yoke Type
* Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece - Flange Type Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece - Flange Type
* Propeller Shaft Replacement - Three Piece - Flange Type Propeller Shaft Replacement - Three Piece - Flange Type
* Tandem Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement Tandem Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement




5. Using the J 3453 , remove the inter-axle differential output shaft nut and washer.
6. Using the J 7804-A , remove the inter-axle differential output shaft yoke.
7. Remove the inter-axle differential output shaft seal.
8. Inspect the inter-axle differential output shaft yoke seal surface for damage or scoring. If the seal surface is damaged, replace the rear propeller shaft yoke.

Installation Procedure

Important: Lubricate the new inter-axle differential output shaft seal lip with the rear axle lubricant. For rear axle lubricant specifications, refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations [1][2]Fluid Type Specifications in General Information.


1. Apply Silicone Sealer (RTV) GM P/N 1052366 or equivalent to OD of the inter-axle differential output shaft seal.
The silicone sealer will overcome minor faults in the differential carrier seal bore.




2. Install the inter-axle differential output shaft seal.




3. Install the inter-axle differential output shaft yoke.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

Important:
* Ensure that the threads are clean and free of grease.

* Apply 272 Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent to the threads of the inter-axle differential input shaft nut.


4. Install the washer and the new inter-axle differential output shaft nut.

Install the J 3453 to secure the yoke and tighten the inter-axle differential input shaft nut to the torque listed in Fastener Tightening Specifications .
If a new inter-axle differential output shaft nut with pre-applied threadlocker is unavailable, the original inter-axle differential output shaft nut may be reused under the following conditions:

* The nut is in good condition.
* The threadlocker is applied.
* Install the differential Refer to Differential Replacement Differential Replacement.

5. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to the following procedures:

* Propeller Shaft Replacement - One-Piece - Yoke Type Propeller Shaft Replacement - One-Piece - Yoke Type
* Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece - Yoke Type Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece - Yoke Type
* Propeller Shaft Replacement - Three Piece - Yoke Type Propeller Shaft Replacement - Three Piece - Yoke Type
* Tandem Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement Tandem Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement

6. Remove the wheel blocks.
