Relay Rod Replacement (TRW Ross Steering Gear)
Removal Procedure
A non-adjustable relay rod connects the pitman arm to the steering arm. If the relay rod becomes worn or damaged, replace the complete assembly.
Tools Required
J 26813-B Steering Linkage Puller
1. Remove the cotter pin (4).
2. Discard the cotter pin.
3. Remove the relay rod/pitman arm nut (3).
4. Use the J 26813-B in order to remove the relay rod from the pitman arm
5. Remove the cotter pin (3).
6. Remove the nut (4).
7. Use the J 26813-B in order to remove the relay rod from the steering arm.
8. Inspect the relay rod (10) for damage
9. Inspect the end assembly stud threads for damage.
10. Inspect the assembly rubber seals for the following conditions:
* Damage
* Deterioration
11. Install the nuts (9, 12).
12. Use a torque wrench in order to measure the torque used to turn the ball stud.
13. Replace the relay rod if the turning torque is less than 0.5 Nm (5 lb in).
Installation Procedure
1. Install the relay rod (2) ball joint-pitman arm end to the pitman arm (1).
2. Install the pitman arm/relay rod nut (3).
3. Install the relay rod (1) ball joint steering arm end to the steering arm.
4. Install the nut (4).
Important: Do not back off a relay rod nut in order to insert a cotter pin.
5. Advance both relay rod nuts (9, 12) to the nearest cotter pin slot.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
6. Tighten both relay rod ball joint nuts (9, 12).
Tighten both relay rod nuts to 160 Nm (120 lb ft).
7. Install new cotter pins
8. Lubricate the relay rod with chassis lubricant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations [1][2]Fluid Type Specifications and Maintenance Schedule Maintenance in Maintenance and Lubrication.
