Fuel Pressure Regulator: Service and Repair
CAUTIONS:- Compressed air must never be used to test or clean a fuel pressure regulator, as damage to the fuel pressure regulator may result.
- Clean the fuel pressure regulator filter screen with gasoline if necessary.
- The fuel pressure regulator should not be immersed in solvent in order to prevent damage to the fuel pressure regulator.
- The fuel return line must be connected before tightening the regulator attaching screw to prevent the regulator from rotating. Rotation of the regulator could damage the retainer and spacer bracket and lead to a fuel leak at the regulator Inlet.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Relieve fuel system pressure, refer to Fuel Pressure Release.
2. Upper intake manifold.
3. Fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
4. Fuel pressure regulator retaining screw.
5. Using a shop towel to catch any spilled fuel, lift and twist the fuel pressure regulator in order to remove the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel rail.
6. Retainer and spacer bracket from rail and discard.
7. Fuel pressure regulator from engine fuel return pipe.
8. Fuel pressure regulator inlet O-ring and discard.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Inspect the filter screen for contamination. If contaminated, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
2. Lubricate new pressure regulator inlet O-ring with clean engine oil and install on regulator inlet.
3. Fuel return pipe to regulator.
4. New retainer and spacer bracket into slot on fuel rail.
5. Pressure regulator to fuel rail and tighten pipe nut to 17 Nm (13 Nm lb ft).
6. Fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
7. Pressure regulator attaching screw and tighten to 8.5 Nm (76 lb in).
8. Inspect and verify that retainer and spacer bracket is engaged in slots in fuel rail. Grasp and pull on regulator to ensure that it is properly seated.
9. Upper intake manifold.
10. Fuel filler cap.
11. Inspect for leaks:
a. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position for 2 seconds.
b. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF for 10 seconds.
c. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
d. Check for fuel leaks.
