Unit Repair

Power Steering Pump Assembly:








REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Power steering pump from vehicle. Refer to Power Steering Pump.
2. Mount pump in a table vise.

Suction Hose Connector:





3. Suction hose connector bolt, connector and oaring from pump body.

Pressure Switch:





4. Pressure switch and discharge connector assembly from pump.

Flow Control Valve Assembly:





5. Discharge connector and flow control valve assembly from pump.

Removing Rear Pump Cover:





6. Rear pump cover and O-ring seal from pump by removing four bolts.

Removing Vanes From Rotor:





7. Vanes from the rotor.

Rotor Snap Ring:





8. Snap ring, rotor and cam ring from pump.
9. Shaft with pulley attached, side plate and the oil seal from pump.

MEASURE

Vane To Rotor Clearance:





^ Vane to rotor clearance using a feeler gage. Maximum vane to rotor clearance is 0.06 (0.0023 inch). If vane to rotor clearance is greater than specified, replace the pump assembly.

Flow Control Valve Spring Measurement:





^ Free length of the flow control valve spring using dial calipers. Free length of spring should fall within 30.5 mm - 33.5 mm (1.20 inch to 1.32 inch): If valve spring does not fall within specifications, replace the pump assembly.

INSPECT

Pump Body And Shaft Inspection:




Cam Ring Inspection:





^ Pump body, cam ring, rotor, vanes and flow control valve for excessive wear.
^ Power steering pump body for cracks or leaks.
^ If excessive wear, cracks or leaks are present on pump body or any internal parts, the power steering pump must be replaced.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

Important
^ Replace all old power steering pump O-ring seals with new ones from the power steering pump seal kit.
^ Lubricate internal parts with power steering gear and pump fluid Dexron III, or equivalent.

Pulley And Shaft Installation To Side Plate:





1. Oil seal, pulley with shaft attached and side plate to power steering pump.

Rotor Snap Ring:





2. Cam ring, rotor and snap ring to pump.
3. Vanes to the rotor.
4. New O-ring seal and rear pump cover to pump; secure with four bolts.

Important: After installing cover, check to make sure that shaft can be turned by hand.

Tighten Power steering pump rear cover/cam ring bolts to 24 Nm (17.5 ft. lbs.).

Installing Flow Control Valve And Pressure Connector:





5. Flow control valve assembly and discharge connector to pump.

Tighten Power steering pump pressure connector to 66 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).

Pressure Switch:





6. Pressure switch to pump.

Tighten Power steering pump pressure switch to 18 Nm (13.5 ft. lbs.).

Suction Hose Connector:





7. New O-ring and suction hose connector to pump; secure with one bolt.

Tighten Power steering pump suction hose connector bolt to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

8. Power steering pump to vehicle. Refer to Power Steering Pump.
