Thermostat: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Remove the radiator cap.





2. Open the drain plug (3) and the drain coolant to a level below the thermostat.
3. Close the drain plug (3).





4. Remove two bolts and the thermostat cap (3) from the intake manifold.
5. Remove the thermostat (1) and the gasket from the thermostat housing.
6. Clean any gasket material, corrosion or debris from the thermostat cap.
7. Clean the intake manifold mating surfaces.
8. Inspect the thermostat.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE





IMPORTANT: Position the air bleed valve (2) toward the front of the vehicle.

1. Install the thermostat (1).
2. Install a new thermostat gasket.
3. Install the thermostat cap (3) to the intake manifold.

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Secure the thermostat cap (3) with two bolts.
^ Tighten the thermostat cap bolts to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.).

5. Fill the radiator with approved coolant.
6. Start the engine.
7. Allow the coolant to attain operating temperature (both hoses feel warm and the coolant is flowing through the radiator).
8. Check for leaks in the cooling system.
9. Shut off the engine.
10. Install the radiator cap.
