Brake Caliper Replacement (Front Wheel)



IMPORTANT: Refer to Disc Brakes System Description.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE





1. Remove two-thirds of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
2. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle with proper safety stands.
3. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the hub.
4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
5. Remove the ABS sensor wire retainer (4 wheel disc brakes).





6. Position a C-clamp over the outer brake shoe and the caliper.
6.1. Tighten the C-clamp until the piston bottoms in the caliper bore.
6.2. Remove the C-clamp.





7. Disconnect the brake hose from the caliper (S4WD).





8. Disconnect the brake hose from the caliper (RWD).





9. Remove the caliper mounting bolts.
10. Remove the caliper.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE





1. Inspect the mounting bolts and sleeves for corrosion. Do not polish away any corrosion.
2. Replace corroded mounting bolts and sleeves.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE





1. Lubricate the sleeves and bushings with Delco Silicone Lube or equivalent.
2. Install the bushings and sleeves in the caliper.





3. Install the caliper and the two mounting bolts.
^ Tighten the mounting bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).(2 wheel disc)

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





4. Install the caliper and the two mounting bolts.
^ Tighten the mounting bolts to 105 Nm (77 ft. lbs.). (4 wheel disc)





5. Compress the lining ears to the caliper.

NOTICE: Make sure the brake hose is not twisted or kinked after installation. Damage to the hose could result.





6. Connect the brake hose to the caliper, if removed.
^ Tighten the brake hose fitting to 44 Nm (32 ft. lbs.).





7. Connect the brake hose to the caliper (RWD).

NOTICE: Make sure the brake hose is not twisted or kinked after installation. Damage to the hose could result.

^ Tighten the brake hose fitting to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).





8. Measure the clearance between the caliper and the steering knuckle.
8.1. Measure each end of the caliper individually.
8.2. Add the two measurements together. The total measurement should be 0.26 - 0.60 mm (0.010 - 0.024 in).

9. Connect the ABS sensor wire, if removed.
^ Tighten the ABS sensor wire to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).

10. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Installation.
11. Lower the vehicle and remove the safety stands.
