Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the propeller shaft.





3. Remove the rear extension oil seal.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

- Required Tools
- J21426 Rear Extension Seal Installer





1. Install the new seal using J21426.
2. Coat the outer edge of the seal case with a non-hardening sealer.
3. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to one of the following as appropriate:
- Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Axle-All Except NP8) in Driveline/Axle.
- Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Axle-NP8) in Driveline/Axle.
- Propeller Shaft Replacement (System Balanced Assembly) in Driveline/Axle.
- Propeller Shaft Replacement-One-Piece in Driveline/Axle.
- Propeller Shaft Replacement-Two-Piece in Driveline/Axle.
- Propeller Shaft Replacement-Three-Piece in Driveline/Axle.

4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Fill the transmission to the proper level with Dexron (R) III Transmission Fluid.
