Upper Steering Column Housing Components

NOTE: This procedure is used to service the following components:
^ Upper Column Housing Components
^ Shaft Lock Shield Asm
^ Turn Signal Cancel Cam Asm
^ Upper Bearing Spring
^ Thrust Washer

^ Tools Required:
- J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor
- Or Equivalent

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Do removal steps 1 through 6, Refer to Coil Assembly, Inflatible Restraint Steering Wheel.
- Let coil assembly (2) hang freely.
2. Shaft lock retaining ring (4) using J 23653-SIR to push down shaft lock shield assembly (5).
- Dispose of ring (4).
3. Shaft lock shield assembly (5).
4. Turn signal cancel cam assembly (6).
5. Upper bearing spring (7).
6. Thrust washer (8).

INSTALL OR CONNECT

CAUTION: Always use the correct fastener In the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener pint Interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and pint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these Instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems. Failure to do may result in component damage or malfunction of steering column.

1. Thrust washer (8).
2. Upper bearing spring (7).
3. Turn signal cancel cam assembly (6).
- Lubricate lower brass surface with grease, synthetic (service kit).
4. Shaft lock shield assembly (5).
- Align inner block tooth of lock plate to block tooth of steering shaft assembly (32).
5. New shaft lock retaining ring (4) using J 23653-SIR to push down shaft lock shield assembly (5).
- Ring (4) must be firmly seated in groove on shaft.
6. Do installation steps 1 through 4 and 7 through 10, Refer to Coil Assembly, Inflatible Restraint Steering Wheel.
