Connecting Rod Replacement
Steering Linkage - Full Time Four-Wheel Drive:
^ Tools Required:
- J 24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller
- J 29193 Steering Linkage Installer (12 mm)
- Or Equivalent
NOTE: Use the proper tool to separate all ball joints.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Prevailing torque nut from the connecting rod ball stud. Discard the prevailing torque nut.
2. Connecting rod from the relay rod using J 24319-B.
3. Prevailing torque nut from the pitman arm ball stud. Discard the prevailing torque nut.
4. Connecting rod from the pitman arm using J 24319-B.
INSPECT
- Ball stud threads for damage.
- Ball stud seals for excessive wear.
CLEAN
- Threads on the ball stud.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Connecting rod to the pitman arm ball stud using J 29193. Make sure the seal is on the stud. Tighten J 29193 to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) to seat the tapers. Remove the tool.
2. New prevailing torque nut to the pitman arm ball stud. Tighten to 62 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).
3. Connecting rod ball stud to the relay rod using J 29193. Make sure the seal is on the stud. Tighten J 29193 to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) to seat the tapers. Remove the tool.
4. New prevailing torque nut to the connecting rod to relay rod bail stud. Tighten to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
