Starter Noise Test
1. Remove the flywheel inspection plate.
2. Inspect the flywheel for signs of wear such as:
^ Chipped or missing gear teeth.
^ A bent flywheel.
3. Replace the flywheel if necessary.

4. If the starter whines after the engine is turned ON perform the following steps:
4.1. Shim the starter away from the flywheel.
4.2. Add the long shims, one at a time, until the noise stops.
4.3. Do not exceed two shims.
5. If the starter whines during cranking, perform the following steps:
5.1. Shim the starter toward the flywheel.
5.2. Add the short shims between the outboard starter mounting pad and the engine mount until the noise stops.
5.3. Do not add more than four shims.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
6. Tighten the starter mounting bolts when shimming is complete.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 43 N-m (32 lb ft).
