Caliper Replacement

NOTE:
^ Do not use lubricated compressed air on brake parts as damage to rubber components may result.
^ Replace all components included in repair kits used to service this caliper assembly.
^ Lubricate rubber parts with clean brake fluid to ease assembly.
^ If any hydraulic component is removed or disconnected, it may be necessary to bleed all or part of the brake hydraulic system.
^ Replace pads in axle sets only.
^ The torque values specified are for dry, Unlubricated fasteners.
^ Perform service operations on a clean bench, free from all mineral oil materials.

Rear Brake Caliper Components:

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
2. Tire and wheel.
^ Install wheel nuts to retain rotor.

Removing Rear Brake Hose Fitting:

3. Brake hose fitting bolt/screw, brake hose fitting and two gaskets only if caliper is being removed for overhaul.
A. Discard old gaskets.
B. Plug hole in caliper housing and brake hose fitting.
4. Upper caliper guide pin bolt/screw and discard.
5. Lower caliper guide pin bolt/screw and discard, only if removing caliper from vehicle.
6. Caliper housing from rotor and anchor bracket.
^ If caliper overhaul or replacement is not required, hang caliper housing from suspension to avoid damage to brake hose.
^ Inner and outer pads only if they are being replaced or if anchor bracket is being removed.

Inspect
A. Guide pins for free movement in anchor bracket
- Replace guide pins or guide pin boots if corroded, worn or damaged.
B. Inner and outer pads for wear and maximum taper of 0.15 mm (0.006 inch).
- Replace with new inner and outer pad sets if they are tapered beyond specification.
C. Brake hose fitting bolt/screw.
- If through-hole in brake hose fitting bolt/screw is blocked, remove blockage or replace-brake hose fitting bolt/screw.

Brake Pad Removal
Remove or Disconnect

Compressing Rear Brake Caliper Piston:

1. Two-thirds of brake fluid from master Cylinder.
2. Position a C-clamp and tighten until piston bottoms in base of caliper housing.
- Make sure one end of C-clamp rests on brake hose fitting bolt/screw and other end against outer pad.
3. Upper caliper guide pin bolt/screw.
- Discard upper caliper guide pin bolt/screw.
4. Inner and outer pads.

Rear Disc Brake Inner And Outer Pad Replacement:

A. Rotate caliper housing about lower caliper guide pin bolt/screw and guide pin. Be careful not to strain hose or cable conduit.
B. Lift out inner and outer pads.
5. Rear brake pad spring shim.
^ Clean
- All residue from shoe guide surfaces on anchor bracket and caliper housing.

^ Inspect
- Guide pins for free movement in anchor bracket.

Note:Replace guide pins or guide pin boots if corroded or damaged.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Inner and outer pads, if removed.

Brake Pad Installation
1. Rear brake pad spring shim.
2. Spring must lay flat within groove at caliper. New inner and outer pads.
- Outer pad with insulator is installed toward caliper housing. Inner pad is installed nearest the piston.
- Replace inner and outer pads in axle sets only. Rotate caliper housing into its operating position.
3. Springs on inner and outer pads must not stick through inspection hole in caliper housing. If springs are sticking through inspection hole in caliper housing, lift caliper housing and reposition springs.

^ Outer pad with insulator is installed toward caliper housing. Inner pad is installed nearest to piston.
2. Caliper housing over rotor and into anchor bracket.
3. New upper caliper guide pin bolt/screw.
^ Tighten bolt/screw to 31 Nm (23 lb.ft.)

4. New lower caliper guide pin bolt/screw, if removed.
^ Tighten bolt/screw to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).

5. Brake hose fitting, two new gaskets and brake hose fitting bolt/screw, if removed.
^ Tighten brake hose fitting bolt/screw to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).

6. Bleed brake hydraulic system, if brake hose fitting was removed.
7. Tire and wheel.
^ Remove wheel nuts securing rotor.
8. Lower vehicle.
9. With engine running, pump brake pedal slowly and firmly three times to seat inner and outer pads.
10. Check brake hydraulic system for leaks.
