Steering Column - Removal and Installation
NOTICE: When the steering column Is removed from the vehicle, a sharp blow on the end of the steering shaft or shift lever, leaning on the column assembly, or dropping of the assembly could shear or loosen the plastic fasteners that maintain column rigidity.NOTICE: Do not rotate steering shaft after steering column has been removed. Damage to SIR components may occur.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Disable the SIR system, refer to "Disabling the SIR System."
3. Transmission control linkage (column-shift models only), refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
4. Steering column bulkhead connector from the vehicle wire harness by loosening the center screw.
5. Nuts that retain the steering column to the steering column toe plate.
6. Nuts that retain the steering column to the steering column support bracket.
7. Steering column from the vehicle.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Steering column to the vehicle.
2. Nuts that retain the steering column to the steering column support bracket.
- Tighten nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
3. Nuts that retain the steering column to the steering column toe plate.
- Tighten nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
4. Steering column bulkhead connector to the vehicle wire harness.
- Tighten screw to 6 Nm (53 lb in).
5. Transmission control linkage, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
6. Enable the SIR system, refer to "Enabling the SIR System."
7. Negative battery cable.
