Cylinder Head Removal





1. Remove the water pump. Refer to Cooling Systems.
2. Remove the thermostat housing. Refer to Cooling System.
3. Disconnect the generator wires. Remove the generator support brace. Refer to Starting and Charging.
4. Remove the air conditioning compressor and brackets. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
5. Remove the accessory support bracket with the generator and the power steering pump still attached. Refer to Starting and Charging.





6. Remove the Oxygen sensor.
7. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust System.
8. Remove the upper and lower intake manifold. Service and Repair
9. Remove the rocker arms and pushrods. Service and Repair





10. Remove the engine lift bracket from the rear of the engine.
11. Remove the oil fill tube. Service and Repair





12. Remove the cylinder head bolts.





13. Remove the cylinder head stud-ended bolt.
14. Remove the cylinder head.





15. Clean the following areas:
^ Clean any carbon deposits from the combustion chambers.
^ Clean all traces of old cylinder head gasket from the cylinder head and from the engine block.

CAUTION: Do not use abrasive pads to clean the cylinder head or block surfaces. An abrasive pad will damage the cylinder head and block surfaces. Abrasive pads also produce a fine grit that will contaminate the engine oil.

^ It is necessary to remove the gasket material. Do not attempt to remove all marks from the cylinder head gasket surfaces.
^ Clean the cylinder head bolt thread.
^ Clean the threads that are in the engine block.
16. Inspect the engine block to cylinder head mating surfaces for the following conditions.
^ Nicks
^ Heavy scratches
^ Any other damage
