Cylinder Head - Installation

^ Special Tool Required
- J 36660 or a Torque Angle Meter, or equivalent





1. Install the cylinder head gasket to the block.
2. Use a socket to push the head gasket over the rear dowel pin.

NOTE: Install the cylinder head gasket with the words "THIS SIDE UP" showing.

3. Carefully guide the cylinder head into place over the dowel pins. This operation may require an assistance.





4. Install the cylinder head bolts by hand.





5. Tighten the cylinder head bolts.
^ Tighten long cylinder head bolts to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.)
^ Tighten the short cylinder head bolts to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.)

Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:

6. Use the following sequence in order to tighten the cylinder head bolts:
a. Tighten bolt 1 to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.)
b. Tighten bolt 2 to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.)
c. Tighten bolt 3 to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.)
d. Tighten bolt 4 to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.)
e. Tighten bolt 5 to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.)
f. Tighten bolt 6 to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.)
g. Tighten bolt 7 to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.)
h. Tighten bolt 8 to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.)
i. Tighten bolt 9 to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.)
j. Tighten bolt 10 (stud bolt) to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.)
k. Use J 36660 to tighten all the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees in sequence.





7. Install the engine lift bracket onto the rear of the engine.





8. Install the rocker arms and install the pushrods. Service and Repair
9. Install the rocker arm cover. Service and Repair
10. Install the lower and upper intake manifold. Service and Repair
11. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust System.
12. Connect the exhaust pipe. Refer to Exhaust System.





13. Install the oxygen sensor.
14. Install the oil fill tube. Service and Repair
15. Install the accessory support bracket with the generator and the power steering pump still attached. Refer to Generator Replacement.
16. Install the air conditioning compressor with the brackets still attached. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
17. Connect the generator wires. Install the generator support brace. Refer to Starting and Charging.
18. Install the thermostat housing. Refer to Cooling System.
19. Install the water pump. Refer to Cooling System.
