Front Driving Axle (All Wheel Drive)
- Tool Required:- J 8614-01 Companion Flange Holder
Important: The driveling components in this vehicle have been factory system-balanced. System balance provides a smoother running driveline operation. However, it is essential the positions of all driveling components relative to the propeller shaft and axles be observed and accurately reference marked prior to disassembly. These components include the propeller shafts, drive axles, pinion flange, inner axle shafts, etc. All components must be reassembled in the exact relationship to each other as they were when removed. Specifications, torque values, and any measurements prior to disassembly must be followed to maintain the factory balance.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Unlock steering column so linkage is free to move.
3. Raise vehicle and support it with safety stands.
4. Bolts from propeller shaft flange.
5. Propeller shaft.
- Support the propeller shaft out of the way.
6. Check and record preload with an inch pound torque wrench.
- This will give combined pinion bearing, seal, carrier bearing, axle bearing, and seal preload.
7. Pinion flange nut and washer.
- Hold the pinion flange with J 8614-01.
8. Pinion flange using J 8614-01.
- Have a suitable container to catch lubricant.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Special seal lubricant or equivalent to outside of pinion flange.
2. New pinion flange.
3. Washer and a new nut using J 8614-01.
- Tighten nut a little at a time, turning the pinion flange several times after each tightening to set the rollers. Check the bearing preload each time until preload is 0.3 to 0.6 Nm (3 to 5 inch lbs.) more than the reading recorded during removal.
4. Propeller shaft.
5. Bolts to flange.
- Tighten bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
Inspect
- Axle lubricant level and add as needed.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Negative battery cable.
