Band Apply Servo: Service and Repair

- Tools Required:
- J 29714-A Servo Cover Compressor
- J 22269-01 Piston Compressor
- J 22269-01 Piston Compressor
- J 22269-01 Piston Compressor
- J 29714-A Servo Cover Compressor

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT









- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Lower the transmission if needed for clearance.
- Install J 29714-A Servo Cover Compressor.

1. Servo cover retaining ring.
2. Servo cover and O-ring seal.
- If the servo cover seems to be hung up on the seal, cut and remove the O-ring seal before removing the cover.
3. 4th apply piston.
4. Servo return spring.
5. Servo pin retainer ring, washer, and apply pin spring.
6. 2nd apply piston pin.
7. Install J 22269-01.
8. Cushion spring retainer and cushion spring.

DISASSEMBLE









1. Housing from the piston.
- Seal from the housing.
2. Retainer ring from the pin.
- Washer and the spring.
3. Pin.
- Seals from the pin.
4. Retainer ring from the piston using J 22269-01.
- Retainer and the spring.
- Seals from the piston.

Clean
- All parts using solvent. Air dry.

Inspect
- Pistons for porosity and damage.
- Seal grooves for damage.
- Cover for porosity and damage.
- Seals for nicks, cuts, and binding in the seal grooves.
- If damage is found, check for the cause of the damage.
- Springs for kinks and bending.
- Pin for wear and burrs.

Important: Check the case servo bore for damage and sharp edges.

Measure

- Tool Required:
- J 33037 Band Apply Pin Tool Vernier Calipers or Micrometer





1. Servo pin length by installing pin and J 33037.
A. Apply 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.) torque and check the gage slot (A).
B. If the white line is seen in the slot, the pin is correct.
C. If the white line is not seen in the slot, replace the pin using the following for pin identification.
- 1 groove, pin length 65.82-66.12 mm (2.59-2.60 inch.).
- 2 grooves, pin length 67.23-67.53 mm (2.65-2.66 inch.).
- No grooves, pin length 68.64-68.94 mm (2.70-2.71 inch.).
D. Remove the pin and J 33037.





2. Piston and housing dimensions.
- Measure the piston dimension (3).
- Measure the housing dimension (4).
- Check 2ND APPLY PISTON AND HOUSING DIMENSIONS figure legend for the proper dimensions.

ASSEMBLE





1. Retainer and the spring in the piston.
- New seals on the piston.





- Retainer ring using J 22269-01.
2. Pin.
- New seals on the pin.
3. Retainer ring on the pin.
- Spring and the washer.
4. Housing on the piston.
- New seal on the housing.

Important: Ensure the seals are correctly positioned.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Servo return spring.
2. 2nd apply piston assembly.
3. 4th apply piston.
4. New seal on the cover.
5. Cover and the retaining ring using J 29714-A.
- Raise the transmission if needed.
- Lower the vehicle.
6. New transmission oil.
