Adjusting Pinion Clearance
Flywheel To Pinion Clearance:
1. Remove the flywheel inspection plate.
2. Inspect the flywheel for signs of unusual wear such as chipped or missing gear teeth, or the flywheel being bent.
3. If the starter whines after the engine starts, shim the starter away from the flywheel. Add shims, one at a time, until the noise problem is corrected. Do not use more than 4 shims total.
4. If the starter whines during cranking, shim the starter towards the flywheel. Add shims between the outboard starter mounting pad and engine mount until the noise stops. Do not add more than 4 shims total.
5. When shimming is done, tighten the starter mounting bolts.
