SIR Diagnostic Flow
CAUTION: In order to avoid deploying the air bag when troubleshooting the SIR system, use only the equipment specified and the instructions given. Failure to use the specified equipment as instructed could cause air bag deployment, personal injury to you or someone else, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.CAUTION: When the vehicle interior has been exposed to extensive water intrusion, such as water leaks, window left open, driving through high water, and so forth, the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) may need to be replaced. With the Ignition OFF, inspect the area under the passenger's seat and the area around the SDM, Including the carpet. If any significant soaking or evidence of significant soaking is detected, the water must be removed, water damage repaired, and the SDM and the SDM harness connector MUST be replaced. Before attempting these repairs, the SIR system must be disabled. See Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming for instructions on how to disable the SIR system. Failure to disable the SIR system may result In air bag deployment, personal injury, or otherwise unneeded SIR system repairs.
These diagnostic procedures will help you to find and repair SIR system malfunctions. To get the best results, it is important to use the diagnostic tables and follow the sequence listed below.
1. PERFORM THE "SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK." The SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK must be the starting point of any SIR diagnostics. The SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK checks for proper AIR BAG warning lamp operation, the ability of the inflatable restraint Sensing Diagnostic Module (SDM) to communicate through the serial data line and whether SIR diagnostic trouble codes exist.
2. REFER TO THE PROPER DIAGNOSTIC TABLE AS DIRECTED BY THE "SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK." The SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK will lead you to the correct table to diagnose any SIR system malfunctions. Bypassing these procedures may result In extended diagnostic time, incorrect diagnosis and incorrect parts replacement.
3. REPEAT THE "SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK" AFTER ANY REPAIR OR DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN PERFORMED. Per forming the SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK after all repair or diagnostic procedures will make sure that you have done the correct repairs and that no other malfunctions exist.
