Oil Pan Replacement



OIL PAN REPLACEMENT

Removal Procedure

- A one-piece type oil pan gasket is used.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise the vehicle. Support with suitable safety stands.
3. Drain the engine oil.






4. Remove the oil filter.






5. Disconnect the oil cooler lines from the oil pan and from the adapter.






6. Remove the oil filter adapter.
7. Remove the starter.
8. Remove the starter motor opening shield.
9. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines.
10. Remove the front drive axle tube mount nuts.
11. Remove the lower drive axle bushing bolt (left).
12. Remove the rubber bell/housing plugs.
13. Remove the oil pan bolts and the nuts.






14. Remove the oil pan and the gasket.
15. Clean the gasket surfaces on the engine and the oil pan.
16. Inspect the oil pan gasket for damage. Replace the gasket if necessary.

Installation Procedure






1. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346141 or equivalent to the front cover to block joint for 25 mm (1 inch) in both directions from each of the four corners.






2. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346141 or equivalent to the rear crankshaft seal to block joint for 25 mm (1 inch) in both directions from each of the four corners.






3. Install the oil pan gasket to the oil pan.






4. Install the oil pan to the engine.
5. Install the oil pan bolts and the studs in sequence.
6. Install the rubber bell/housing plugs.

IMPORTANT: Anytime the transmission and the oil pan are off the engine at the same time, install the transmission before the oil pan. This will allow for the proper measurement of the oil pan tolerance.

7. Use a feeler gage in order to check the clearance between the three oil pan-to-transmission contact points. If the clearance exceeds 0.254 mm (0.010 inch) at any of the three points repeat the installation steps until the clearance is within specifications.






Tighten

- Tighten the oil pan bolts and the studs in sequence to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

8. Reconnect the transmission oil cooler lines.
9. Install the starter motor opening shield.
10. Install the starter motor.






11. Install the oil filter adapter.






12. Install the oil cooler lines.






13. Install the oil filter.
14. Install the front drive axle tube mount nuts.
15. Install the lower drive axle bushing bolt (left).
16. Lower the vehicle.
17. Install the proper quantity and grade of engine oil.
18. Connect the negative battery cable.
