Inner CV Joint (Tripot Housing) Replacement
INNER CV JOINT/BOOT (TRIPOT HOUSING) REPLACEMENT
TOOL REQUIRED:
* J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers J 35910 Boot Clamp Tool
DISASSEMBLE
* Place the drive axle in a vise using protective covers over the vise jaws.
1. Boot clamp protectors.
2. Clamps.
* Cut the clamps with side cutters to remove. For swedge ring removal, use a hand grinder to cut through the ring taking care not to damage the housing.
3. Axle shaft with spider assembly from the housing.
CLEAN
* Thoroughly clean the tripot housing and rollers. Allow to dry completely before reassembly.
IMPORTANT: Handle the tripot spider assembly with care. The tripot needle rollers may separate from the spider trunnions.
INSPECT
* Rollers, needle bearings, trunnions, and housing for unusual wear, cracks, or other damage. Replace as required.
4. Spacer ring using J 8059.
* Slide the spacer ring back on the axle shaft then slide the spider assembly back to expose the snap ring.
5. Snap ring using J 8059.
6. Spider assembly.
CLEAN
* Old grease from the housing.
* Rust from the boot mounting grooves if any is present Use a wire brush.
ASSEMBLE
TOOLS REQUIRED:
* J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers J 35910 Clamp Installer
1. Small boot clamp.
2. Inboard boot to the axle shaft.
3. Spider assembly to the axle shaft.
* Make sure the snap ring counterbore faces the housing end of the axle.
4. Snap ring using J 8059).
5. Spacer ring using J 8059.
* Make sure the spacer ring is fully seated in the groove.
TIGHTEN
* Small boot clamp to 136 Nm (100 lbs. ft.).
MEASURE
* Clamp ear gap dimension.
* Repack the housing with about half of the grease furnished in the boot kit. Put the remainder of the grease in the boot.
* Coat the inside of the boot sealing lips with grease.
6. Axle shaft with spider assembly to the housing.
IMPORTANT
* The joint must be assembled to 160 mm (6.250 in.) or boot damage may occur.
7. Clamp with J 35910.
TIGHTEN
* Clamp to 176 Nm (130 lbs. ft.)
MEASURE
* Clamp ear gap dimension.
