Pressure Regulating Solenoid: Testing and Inspection

Pressure Control Solenoid Circuit Check:

Pressure Control Solenoid Circuit:

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The pressure control solenoid is a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controlled device used to regulate transmission line pressure. The PCM compares Throttle Position (TP) percentage, engine RPM, and other inputs to determine the line pressure for a given load. The PCM then regulates the pressure by applying a variable amperage to the pressure control solenoid. The applied amperage varies from 0.1 to 1.1 amps. At low current the line pressure will be high causing harsh shifts. At 1.1 amps the line pressure will be low causing soft shifts.

TEST DESCRIPTION
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.

1. This test checks the ability of the PCM to command the pressure control solenoid.
2. This test checks internal transmission harness and the pressure control solenoid resistance.
3. This test checks internal transmission harness and the pressure control solenoid resistance.
4. This test checks for short to ground.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
Check for poor connections at PCM and the transmission pass-thru connector.
