INCORRECT SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR

1985 EL CAMINO MODELS EQUIPPED WITH RPO MW9 (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) AND ASSEMBLED AT RAMOS ARIZPE ONLY

General Motors has determined that some 1985 Chevrolet El Camino models equipped with RPO MW9 (Automatic Transmission) may have been assembled with the incorrect speedometer driven gear assembly.
The incorrect speedometer driven gear will result in the speedometer indicating a vehicle speed which is approximately 10% slower than the actual vehicle speed. For example, when the vehicle speed is 55 mph, the speedometer will indicate approximately 50 mph.
To correct this condition, the speedometer driven gear will be replaced in all involved vehicles.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are some 1985 El Caminos equipped with RPO MW9 (Automatic Transmission) within the following vehicle parameters:

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Tdentification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.
These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the followup necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin was not shipped any involved vehicles.
OWNER NOTIFICATION
Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of Owner Letter included with this bulletin).
DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Raise vehicle.
2. Disconnect speedometer cable.
3. Remove retainer bolt retainer and speedometer driven gear assembly as shown in Figure 200C-195, page 200C-49 of the 1985 Chevrolet Shop Manual (ST-329-85).
4. Inspect speedometer driven gear assembly. If vehicle is equipped with the incorrect speedometer driven gear (31 tooth/white), the correct gear (26 tooth/brown) should be installed.
5. Installation of speedometer driven gear is the reverse of removal. Retainer bolt should be torqued to 10-14 N-m (7-10 Ft-Lbs).
6. Install "Campaign Identification Label" according to the instructions contained in this bulletin.
PARTS INFORMATION
Parts required to complete this modification are to be obtained from your Chevrolet zone Service Department. Because of the limited number of parts, dealers are to request only those parts which are actually required to complete this modification.

**The "Parts Allowance Column" represents 30% of dealer net when parts are furnished no charge by Chevrolet.
Dealers will automatically receive the correct labor allowance based on the labor operation performed.

Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Bulletin will require a "Campaign Identification Label." Each label provides a space to include the five digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen.
Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in for periodic servicing by the owner.
Apply "Campaign Identification Label" only on a clean dry surface.

To correct this condition on your vehicle the speedometer will be inspected and when required replaced. This service will be performed for you at no charge.
Instructions for this service have been sent to your Chevrolet dealer. Please contact your dealer to arrange a service date. The labor time to inspect your vehicle is approximately 15 minutes. If the speedometer driven gear assembly must be replaced it will take an additional 20 minutes. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be needed to process your vehicle.
The enclosed Owner Reply Card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist them in making the necessary correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time.
