Steering Column Tilt Wheel Release Lever Replacement
Steering Column Tilt Wheel Release Lever Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling (Service and Repair).
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection).
3. Remove the driver knee bolster panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement (Service and Repair).
4. Disconnect any electrical connectors as necessary.
5. Loosen the lower steering column bolt.
Caution: Once the steering column is lowered, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Leaning on or pushing down on the column will result in damage to the intermediate shaft boot seal and could cause the jacket to bend of deform.
6. Remove the upper steering column bolts (1).
7. Lower the tilt lever in order to unlock the tilt column and release the spring tension.
8. Remove the 2 steering column tilt lock release lever springs.
9. Remove the steering column nut from the tilt lever shaft.
Discard the nut.
10. Remove the following components from the right side of the steering column:
1. The steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever thrust bearing
2. The steering column tilt wheel release lever bolt spacer
3. The large steering column tilt wheel release lever retainer
11. Remove the following components from the left side of the steering column:
1. The steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever
2. The steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever cam
3. The steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever shaft follower
12. Leave the 2 steering column tilt wheel release lever tilt teeth retainers and the lever detent in the assembled position.
Installation Procedure
Note: You MUST properly install the 2 steering column tilt wheel release lever tilt teeth retainers into the upper steering column bracket in order to prevent steering column movement in the event of a collision.
1. If the 2 steering column tilt wheel release lever tilt teeth retainers or the lever detent was removed, complete the following steps in order to install the 2 steering column tilt wheel release lever tilt teeth retainers and the lever detent.
1. Align the 2 steering column tilt wheel release lever tilt teeth retainers in the proper orientation.
2. Compress the tooth spring within the compression bracket slot.
3. Carefully install the 2 steering column tilt wheel release lever tilt teeth retainers and the lever detent in the correct orientation.
2. Apply grease to the steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever cam. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers (Fluid Type Specifications).
3. Assemble the steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever cam to the steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever shaft follower.
4. Align and install the following components to the steering column tilt wheel release lever tilt tooth retainer on the left side of the steering column:
* The steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever shaft follower
* The steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever cam
* The steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever
5. Assemble the steering column tilt wheel release lever bolt spacer to the large steering column tilt wheel release lever retainer.
6. Align and install the following components to the steering column tilt wheel release lever tilt tooth retainer on the right side of the steering column:
1. The large steering column tilt wheel release lever retainer
2. The steering column tilt wheel release lever bolt spacer
3. The steering column tilt and telescope adjuster lever thrust bearing
7. Install, but DO NOT tighten, the NEW steering column nut to the tilt lever shaft.
8. Install the 2 steering column tilt lock release lever springs.
9. Hold the tilt lever, with light pressure, against the follower. Move the tilt lever to the lock position. The tilt lever handle should be approximately parallel with the steering column shaft.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
10. Continue to maintain light pressure on the tilt lever and tighten the steering column nut on the tilt lever shaft to 5.5 Nm (49 lb in).
Note: Do not bend the steering column energy absorbing straps located on the upper steering column mounting bracket during installation.
11. Loosely install the upper steering column bolts (1).
12. Move the tilt lever to the unlock position and to the lock position several times while holding the tilt bracket in the proper position.
13. Adjust the tilt lever nut torque until the load on the tilt lever handle is approximately 55 Nm (41 lb ft) to fully close the tilt lever.
14. Compare with a similar vehicle in order to confirm the proper tilt lever closing force.
Warning
In order to ensure the intended function of the steering column in a vehicle during a crash and in order to avoid personal injury to the driver, perform the following:
* Tighten the steering column lower fasteners before you tighten the steering column upper fasteners. Failure to do this can damage the steering column.
* Tighten the steering column fasteners to the specified torque. Overtightening the upper steering column fasteners could affect the steering column collapse.
15. Tighten the lower steering column bolt to 27 Nm (20 lb ft).
16. Tighten the left side upper steering column bolt to 27 Nm (20 lb ft).
17. Tighten the right side upper steering column bolt to 27 Nm (20 lb ft).
18. Connect the electrical connectors.
19. Install the driver knee bolster panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement (Service and Repair).
20. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection).
21. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling (Service and Repair).
22. Reprogram the steering system. Refer to Control Module References (Programming and Relearning).
