Audio - Rear Speaker Vibration/Buzz Noise/Distortion

INFORMATION

Bulletin No.: 09-08-44-017A

Date: November 24, 2010

Subject: Information on Rear Speaker Vibration, Buzz Noise, Distortion/Bass Level Settings

Models:
2010 Chevrolet Camaro

Attention:
Due to the high capabilities of the audio systems available in the Chevrolet Camaro, it is important whenever there is a concern of speaker rattle or buzz noise to fully diagnose the nature of the complaint and the affected components. In most cases, objectionable distortion, rattle or buzzing is NOT the fault of any audio component. Be sure to follow all diagnostics in SI before attempting component replacements. A copy of this bulletin may be given to the customer to explain proper use of the bass control.

Camaro Entertainment System Overview

The Camaro is equipped with two 6 x 9" speakers in the rear interior shelf of the vehicle. These speakers provide the majority of the bass element when listening to music. Owners are provided a broad range of sound quality adjustment available through the radio that allow the tone to be tailored to the listeners' preference. The range of bass control adjustment has been pre-set at the factory, taking into consideration the vehicle acoustics, the quality and clarity of the delivered sound and the physical limits of the audio components.

With this broad range of adjustment, it is possible to induce audible vibration and/or speaker buzz. Proper adjustment of the bass control is essential to obtain desirable sound properties.

Adjusting the bass control too high may result in high volume speaker rattle or buzz, as well as possible sympathetic noise (vibration) from the interior trim panels. Objectionable audible vibrations and higher volume speaker distortion as a result of incorrect bass control adjustment should not be considered a reason to replace the audio speakers without proper diagnostics.

Bass Control Adjustment

In order to adjust the bass control:

1. Press the power button to turn on the radio.
2. Press the tone button.
3. Turn the adjustment knob to highlight "bass."
4. Select the bass control.
5. Adjust the bass by turning the adjustment knob.

- The bass control has a range of +12 to -12 decibels.
- Proper bass control settings WILL vary depending on the source material. Music genres such as rap, hip-hop and electronic may be recorded with bass-heavy sound characteristics and require a lower bass setting on the radio.
- The bass control should be set below the level of audible distortion. Turning the control higher than the point where audible distortion is heard may degrade the overall sound quality.

Note
If the FADER control is set to favor the rear speakers, the perceived volume level where the rear speakers may begin to audibly distort may be lower. In this situation, the rear speakers are being required to "work" harder to obtain the requested volume level as heard from the driver's seat. Adjusting the FADER to the mid-position may help eliminate this concern.

- When elevating the bass response, it is often required to elevate the treble control to maintain a desired sound balance.

Do not replace the rear parcel shelf speakers for vibration of the surrounding components. Replacing the speakers will NOT alleviate this condition.
