Revised Rear Shock Absorber Replacement and Fastener Tightening Specifications
Models:
2004-2005 Chevrolet Malibu
This bulletin is being issued to revise the Rear Shock Absorber Replacement procedure and the Fastener Tightening Specifications in the Rear Suspension sub-section of the Service Manual. Please replace the current information in the Service Manual with the following information.
The following information has been updated within SI. If you are using a paper version of this Service Manual, please make a reference to this bulletin on the affected page.
When originally published, the vehicle application titles (sedan vs. extended sedan), did not appear with the correct procedures. Also, the vehicle applications were also reversed for the shock absorber-to-body nuts and bolts in the fastener tightening specifications. The correct information appears below.
Shock Absorber Replacement (Sedan)
Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the tire and wheel.
3. Using a suitable jack stand, raise the rear knuckle to remove spring tension.
4. Remove the lower shock bolt.
5. Remove the upper shock bolt.
6. Remove the shock from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Position the shock in the vehicle.
Note:
Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
2. Install the upper shock absorber to body bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 90 N.m (66 lb ft).
3. Install the shock absorber to knuckle bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 180 N.m (133 lb ft).
4. Remove the jack stand from the rear knuckle.
5. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
6. Lower the vehicle.
Shock Absorber Replacement (Extended Sedan)
Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
3. Using a suitable jack stand, raise the rear knuckle to remove spring tension.
4. Remove the lower shock bolt.
5. Remove the shock absorber to body nuts.
6. Remove the shock from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Position the shock in the vehicle.
Note:
Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
2. Install the shock absorber to body nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
3. Install the shock absorber to knuckle bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 180 N.m (133 lb ft).
4. Remove the jack stand from the rear knuckle.
5. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
6. Lower the vehicle.
