Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
Brake Shoe ReplacementRemoval Procedure
1. Remove the brake drum.
2. Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in Service Precautions.
Loosen the leading shoe hold-down return spring. The antilock brake system (ABS) braking system configuration is illustrated.
3. Disconnect the upper link of the connecting link spring of the leading shoe to relieve tension on the upper return spring.
4. Remove the upper return spring and the adjuster.
5. Unfasten the trailing shoe and lining assembly hold-down return spring.
6. Disconnect the trailing shoe and lining assembly on the right side.
7. Detach the lower return spring.
Inspection Procedure
1. Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in Service Precautions.
Measure the minimum brake lining thickness.
2. Clean the adjuster assembly and apply grease.
3. Inspect the threads of the adjuster assembly for smooth rotation.
4. Inspect the brake components for damage or wear. Replace any damaged or worn components.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the trailing shoe and lining assembly with the hold-down spring, the washer, and the pin.
2. Verify the parking brake cable is properly routed and attached to the shoe lever.
3. Important: Do not overstretch the lower return spring.
Fasten the lower return spring on the shoe.
4. Position the leading shoe and the adjuster assembly against the backing plate.
5. Fasten the lower return spring to the leading shoe.
6. Install the adjuster assembly.
7. Turn the adjuster in as far as possible.
8. Position the spring clip toward the backing plate.
9. Install the leading shoe with the hold-down spring.
10. Attach the leading shoe upper link-spring connection, which applies tension to the upper return spring.
11. Important: Do not overstretch the upper return spring.
Install the upper return spring from the spring connecting link to the brake shoe.
12. Important: The nut must not lock firmly at the end of the adjustment assembly.
Ensure the adjuster assembly nut is drawn all the way to the stop.
13. Adjust the rear brakes.
14. Install the brake drum.
15. Adjust the park brake.
