Shift Cable: Service and Repair
Removal ProcedureCaution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Starting and Charging.
2. Remove the shift select cable from the TV cable guide bracket.
3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
4. Remove 6 bolts and the left splash shield (1) from the vehicle.
5. Remove the 1 nut, 1 lock washer, and the shift select cable (1) from the manual lever (2).
6. Lower the Vehicle.
7. Remove the E-clip (1) and remove the shift select cable (3) from the shift select cable bracket (2).
8. Remove the 2 bolts and the outer shift select cable grommet retainer from the bulkhead.
9. Remove the rack and pinion. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
10. Remove the upper power steering hose.
11. Remove the heat shield.
12. Remove the center console. Refer to Console Replacement in Body and Frame, Interior Trim, Console.
13. Remove the shift select cable (2) from the manual selector lever.
14. Remove the shift select cable (1) from the manual selector base (2).
15. Remove the carpet retainer from the carpet retaining bracket (1) and pull back the carpet (2) from the floor under the instrument panel compartment.
16. Remove the Powertrain Control Module. Refer to PCM Replacement in Powertrain Management.
17. Remove 2 bolts (1) from the inner shift select cable grommet retainer (2). Remove the shift select cable from the vehicle through passenger compartment side of bulkhead.
18. Inspect the shift select cable for kinks, fraying, or excessive wear. Replace as necessary.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
1. Install the shift select cable into the bulkhead from the passenger compartment side.
Secure with 2 bolts (1) at inner shift select cable grommet retainer (2).
^ Tighten the inner shift select cable grommet retainer bolts to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).
2. Install the Powertrain Control Module. Refer to PCM Replacement in Powertrain Management.
3. Install the carpet (2) to the floor under the I/P compartment. Secure the carpet retaining bracket (1).
4. Connect the shift select cable (1) into the manual selector base (2).
5. Connect the shift select cable (2) to manual selector lever. Secure the manual selector lever (1).
6. Install the center console. Refer to Console Replacement in Body and Frame, Interior Trim, Console.
7. Install the outer shift select cable grommet retainer to the bulkhead. Secure the shift select cable grommet retainer with 2 bolts.
^ Tighten the outer shift select cable grommet retainer bolts to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).
8. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
9. Install the shift select cable (3) into the shift select cable bracket (2). Secure the shift select cable with the E-clip (1).
10. Install the shift select cable into the manual lever. Secure the shift select cable with one lock washer and 1 nut. Do NOT tighten fully.
11. Adjust the shift select cable.
^ Rotate the manual lever counterclockwise until it reaches the park position.
^ Rotate the manual lever clockwise 2 detent positions until the manual lever is in the neutral position.
^ Install the shift select cable (1) into the manual lever (2) and secure the shift select cable.
^ Pull the shift select cable taut making sure no deflection exists in the shift select cable.
^ Tighten the shift select cable nut (3) to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
12. Install the left splash shield to the vehicle. Secure the splash shield (1) with 6 bolts.
^ Tighten the left splash shield bolts to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.)
13. Install the heat shield.
^ Tighten the heat shield bolts to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.)
14. Install the rack and pinion to the vehicle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
15. Lower the vehicle.
16. Install the shift select cable into the TV cable guide bracket.
17. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Starting and Charging.
18. With the ignition switch in the LOCK position and the manual selector in the Park position, attempt to manually push the vehicle. Vehicle should not move.
19. Verify that the vehicle CANNOT be driven in the Neutral position.
20. Verify that the vehicle can be driven in D, 2, and L.
21. Verify that reverse gear DOES operate in R.
