Timing Chain Tensioner: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.





2. Disconnect the secondary spark plug wires (1). Move the wires to the side.





3. Remove the spark plugs.





4. Rotate the engine to top dead center on the number one cylinder.





5. Remove the two timing chain tensioner bolts (1, 2).
6. Remove the timing chain tensioner.

Installation Procedure
1. Release the ratchet pawl.





2. Fully depress the plunger (4). Apply the hook (2) to the pin (3).

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





3. Install the timing chain tensioner into the timing chain cover. Secure the timing chain tensioner using two bolts (1).
- Tighten the timing chain tensioner bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb in).

4. Rotate the engine approximately one revolution in order to release the plunger on the timing chain tensioner.





5. Install the spark plugs.
- Tighten the spark plugs to 28 Nm (21 lb ft).

6. Connect the secondary spark plug wires.
7. Connect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the battery cable bolt to 15 Nm (11 lb ft).
