Brake Pads Replacement
REMOVAL PROCEDURECaution: Avoid taking the following actions when you service wheel brake parts:
^ Do not grind brake linings.
^ Do not sand brake linings.
^ Do not clean wheel brake parts with a dry brush or with compressed air.
Some models or aftermarket brake parts may contain asbestos fibers which can become airborne in dust. Breathing dust with asbestos fibers may cause serious bodily harm. Use a water-dampened cloth in order to remove any dust on brake parts. Equipment is available commercially in order to perform this washing function. These wet methods prevent fibers from becoming airborne.
1. Siphon two-thirds of the fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
2. Press in the piston until the piston bottoms in its bore.
3. Raise and support the vehicle.
4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle.
5. Remove the two caliper pin bolts (1,2).
6. Remove the caliper assembly (2) from the caliper carrier. Suspend the caliper with a wire (1) in order to prevent damage to the brake hose.
7. Remove the following components from the caliper:
^ The pad wear indicator (1)
^ Two inner pad insulators (8,9)
^ Two outer pad insulators (4,5)
^ The inner brake pad (7)
^ The outer brake pad (3)
^ Two brake pad retainers (2,6)
8. Inspect the brake pads for wear. If the pad thickness is less than specification, replace the pad. The minimum lining material (pad) thickness is 1 mm (0.039 inch).
9. Inspect the two brake pad retainers for the following conditions:
^ Sufficient rebound
^ No deformation
^ No cracks
^ No wear
^ No rust
^ No dirt
If the two brake pad retainers meet the above conditions, the two brake pad retainers can be used again.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the two brake pad retainers (2,6) to the caliper housing.
2. Install the front brake wear indicator (1) to the inner pad (7).
3. Apply Lubriplate (R) Lubricant, GM P/N 12346293 or equivalent, or a lubricant meeting the requirements of NLGI #2 Category LB or GC-LB to both sides of a new inner pad insulator (8).
4. Install the inner pad insulator (8) to the inner pad (7).
5. Install the inner pad insulator (9) to the inner pad insulator (8).
6. Apply Lubriplate (R) Lubricant, GM P/N 12346293 or equivalent, or a lubricant meeting the requirements of NLGI #2 Category LB or GC-LB to both sides of a new outer pad insulator (4).
7. Install the outer pad insulator (4) to the outer pad (3).
8. Install the outer pad insulator (5) to the outer pad insulator (4).
9. Install the inner brake pad (7) to the caliper housing with the wear indicator (1) facing upward.
10. Install the outer brake pad (3) to the caliper housing.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
11. Install the caliper housing to the caliper bracket. Secure the caliper assembly using two caliper pin bolts (1).
^ Tighten the caliper pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
12. Apply Lubriplate (R) Lubricant, GM P/N 12346293 or equivalent, or a lubricant meeting the requirements of NLGI #2 Category LB or GC-LB.
13. Install the tire and wheel assembly to the vehicle.
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Fill the master cylinder fluid reservoir.
16. Burnish the pads and the rotors.
