Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

- Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Holding Fixture Tool

IMPORTANT: If you are removing the front suspension crossmember in order to gain access to other components, you may remove the front suspension crossmember, the trans support, the two lower control arms, and the front stabilizer shaft (if equipped) together as a complete unit.





1. Install the J 28467-360. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires or Wheel.
4. Remove the 3 nuts (12, 15, 16) from the crossmember.
5. Support the front suspension crossmember with a jack.





6. Remove the following components:
- The 2 suspension support brace nuts (4, 6)
- The suspension support brace (5)





7. Remove the following components from the left control arm:
- The 1 bolt
- The 2 nuts

8. Remove the following from the right control arm:
- The 1 bolt
- The 2 nuts





9. Remove the following from the right side of the vehicle:
- The 5 bolts (2, 3, 8, 9, 11)
- The 1 stud (7)





10. Remove the following components from the left side of the vehicle:
- The 5 bolts (2, 3, 5, 6, 7)
- The 1 stud (8)





11. Remove the 2 bolts (5, 10) that secure the 2 engine splash shields to the trans support (6).
12. Remove the 2 bolts (3, 4) that secure the front transaxle mount to the trans support.
13. Remove the 2 bolts (1, 2) securing the trans support to the vehicle.
14. Lower the jack supporting the front suspension crossmember.
15. Remove the front suspension crossmember (7), the trans support (6), the two control arms (8, 9), and the front stabilizer shaft (if equipped) together as a unit.





16. If you are replacing the front suspension crossmember or the lower control arms, continue with this procedure.
Remove the nut (5) and the RH front stabilizer shaft insulator clamp (if equipped with a stabilizer shaft).
17. Remove the nut (12) and the RH front lower control arm bracket (10).
18. Remove the 2 bolts in order to separate the stabilizer shaft links from the lower control arms (if equipped with a stabilizer shaft).
19. Remove the bolt (1) and the RH front lower control arm.





20. Remove the nut (9) and the LH front stabilizer shaft insulator clamp (if equipped with a stabilizer shaft).
21. Remove the nut (4) and the LH front lower control arm bracket.
22. Remove the bolt (1) and the LH front lower control arm.
23. Remove the bolt (13).
24. Remove the nut (114) and the trans support.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE





1. Install the trans support to the front suspension crossmember. Secure with the nut (14) and the bolt (13).
- Tighten the nut and bolt to 60 Nm (45 ft. lbs.).

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the LH front lower control arm to the crossmember. Secure with the bolt (1). DO NOT tighten.
3. Install the stabilizer shaft and the stabilizer shaft link to the LH front lower control arm (if equipped with a stabilizer shaft). Secure with the nut. DO NOT tighten.
4. Install the LH front lower control arm bracket to the crossmember. Secure with the nut (4).
- Tighten the nut to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).

5. Install the LH front stabilizer shaft insulator clamp (if equipped with a stabilizer shaft). Secure with the nut (9).
- Tighten the nut to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).





6. Install the RH front lower control arm. Secure with the bolt (1). DO NOT tighten.
7. Install the stabilizer shaft and the stabilizer shaft link to the RH front lower control arm (if equipped with a stabilizer shaft). Secure with the nut. DO NOT tighten.
8. Install the RH front lower control arm bracket (10) to the crossmember. Secure with the nut (12).
- Tighten the nut to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).

9. Install the RH front stabilizer shaft insulator clamp (if equipped with a stabilizer shaft). Secure with the nut (5).

- Tighten the nut to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).





10. Raise and support the front suspension crossmember (7), the trans support (6), the two control arms (8, 9), and the stabilizer shaft (if equipped) together with a jack.
11. Secure the trans support to the vehicle with 2 bolts (1, 2). DO NOT tighten the bolts.
12. Install the 2 bolts (3, 4) that secure the front transaxle mount to the trans support.
- Tighten the 2 front transaxle mount bolts to 64 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).

13. Install the 2 engine splash shield bolts (5, 10) that secure the 2 engine splash shields to the trans support.
- Tighten the 2 splash shield bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





14. Install the 2 studs (3, 7).
- Tighten the 2 studs to 147 Nm (109 ft. lbs.).





15. Install, but do not tighten, the 5 bolts (2, 3, 5, 6, 7) on the left side of the vehicle.





16. Install, but do not tighten, the 5 bolts (2, 3, 8, 9, 11) on the right side of the vehicle.





17. Install the following to the right control arm:
- The 2 nuts
- The 1 bolt
- Tighten the 2 nuts and the bolt to 142 Nm (105 ft. lbs.).

18. Install the following to the left control arm:
- The 2 nuts
- The 1 bolt
- Tighten the 2 nuts and the bolt to 142 Nm (105 ft. lbs.).





19. Remove the jack from the center of the crossmember.
20. Install the 3 nuts (12, 15, 16).
- Tighten the nuts to 57 Nm (42 ft. lbs.).





21. Install the following components:
- The suspension support brace (5)
- The 2 suspension support brace nuts (4, 6)
- Tighten the 2 nuts to 69 Nm (51 ft. lbs.).





22. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires or Wheel.
23. Lower the vehicle.
24. Raise the vehicle on a drive-on lift or move the vehicle to an alignment rack. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.

IMPORTANT: The weight of the vehicle must be supported by the vehicle's tires and wheels.

25. Stabilize the suspension by lifting up and pushing down the front bumper.





26. Torque the 2 bolts (1, 2).
- Tighten the 2 bolts to 60 Nm (45 ft. lbs.).





27. Torque the 1 bolt (6).
- Tighten the bolt to 175 Nm (129 ft. lbs.).

28. Torque the 1 bolt (1).
- Tighten the bolt to 215 Nm (158 ft. lbs.).

29. Torque the 2 bolts (2, 3).
- Tighten the 2 bolts to 225 Nm (167 ft. lbs.).

30. Torque the 1 bolt (5).
- Tighten the bolt to 147 Nm (109 ft. lbs.).

31. Torque the 1 bolt (7).
- Tighten the bolt to 123 Nm (91 ft. lbs.).

32. Use a 5 mm hex wrench in order to hold the stabilizer shaft link stud. Tighten the LH stabilizer shaft link nut.
- Tighten the nut to 44 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).





33. Torque the 1 bolt (9).
- Tighten the bolt to 175 Nm (129 ft. lbs.).

34. Torque the 1 bolt (1).
- Tighten the bolt to 215 Nm (158 ft. lbs.).

35. Torque the 2 bolts (2, 3).
- Tighten the 2 bolts to 225 Nm (167 ft. lbs.).

36. Torque the 1 bolt (11).
- Tighten the bolt to 147 Nm (109 ft. lbs.).

37. Torque the 1 bolt (8).
- Tighten the bolt to 123 Nm (91 ft. lbs.).

38. Use a 5 mm hex wrench in order to hold the stabilizer shaft link stud. Tighten the RH stabilizer shaft link nut.
- Tighten the nut to 44 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).

39. Lower the vehicle.
40. Remove the J 28467-360. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine.
41. Measure the front wheel alignment. Adjust as necessary. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment in Alignment.
