Engine Replacement
Removal Procedure1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
2. Remove the hood panel. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body and Frame.
3. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct and the air cleaner assembly.
4. Remove the washer reservoir bolts and retainers.
5. Remove the underhood accessory wiring junction block. Reposition the junction block.
6. Remove the washer reservoir.
7. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left) and Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right).
8. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
9. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the following:
- The camshaft position sensor
- The Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) sensor
- The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve
- The evaporative emissions canister purge solenoid valve
- The Throttle Position (TP) sensor
- The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
- The generator
- The ignition coil
- The wiring harness grounds
- The two body wiring harness-to-engine harness connectors
10. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
11. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system.
12. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (without Oil Cooler) and Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (with Oil Cooler).
13. Remove the oil filter.
14. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the following:
- The knock sensor
- The heated oxygen sensor
- The crankshaft position sensor
- The starter motor
- The A/C compressor
- The wiring harness grounds
15. Remove the exhaust manifold pipe from the right (rear) exhaust manifold.
16. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
17. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60-E.
18. Remove the starter motor.
19. Remove the A/C compressor bolts. Suitably support the compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
20. Remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60-E.
21. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine in Body and Frame.
22. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Inlet in Cooling System.
23. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to A/T Brace Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60-E.
24. Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
25. Lower the vehicle.
Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.
In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.
26. Disconnect the accelerator control and cruise control servo cable from the throttle body and the cable bracket. Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Replacement in Powertrain Management.
27. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the upper intake manifold.
28. Disconnect the power brake booster vacuum hose from the upper intake manifold. Refer to Vacuum Brake Booster Hose Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
29. Disconnect the fuel feed and return hoses. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement (Filter to Engine) in Powertrain Management.
30. Disconnect the heater outlet and inlet hoses from the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
31. Remove the power steering hoses from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Steering.
32. Remove the power steering pump and set aside. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering.
33. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet in Cooling System.
34. Install the engine lifting device.
35. Remove the remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts.
36. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
37. Remove the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement
38. Install the engine to the engine stand.
39. Remove the generator and the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (Tensioner Assembly) in Starting and Charging.
40. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
41. Remove the ignition control module. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement in Powertrain Management.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the ignition control module. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement in Powertrain Management.
2. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
3. Install the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
4. Install the generator and the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (Tensioner Assembly) in Starting and Charging.
5. Remove the engine from the engine stand.
6. Install the flywheel.
7. Install the engine to the vehicle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
8. Install the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4, and 5) and stud (2).
- Tighten the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4, and 5) and stud (2) to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
9. Remove the engine lifting device.
10. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering.
11. Install the power steering hoses. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Steering.
12. Install the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Inlet in Cooling System.
13. Install the heater outlet and inlet hoses to the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement (3. 1L) in Heating and Air Conditioning.
14. Install the fuel feed and return hoses. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement (Filter to Engine) in Powertrain Management.
15. Install the power brake booster vacuum hose to the upper intake manifold. Refer to Vacuum Brake Booster Hose Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
16. Install the vacuum hoses from the upper intake manifold.
Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.
In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.
17. Install the accelerator control and cruise control servo cable to the cable bracket and the throttle body. Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Bracket Replacement Powertrain Management.
18. Connect electrical harness connectors to the following:
- The camshaft position sensor
- The manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor
- The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
- The evaporative emissions canister purge solenoid valve
- The throttle position (TP) sensor
- The idle air control (IAC) valve
- The generator
- The ignition coil
- The wiring harness grounds
- The two body wiring harness-to-engine harness connectors
19. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
20. Install the -radiator outlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet in Cooling System.
21. Install the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
- Tighten the upper transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1) to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
22. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to A/T Brace Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60-E.
23. Install the right engine splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine in Body and Frame.
24. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts in Automatic Transaxle 4T60-E.
25. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
26. Install the starter motor.
27. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60-E.
28. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement
29. Install the three-way catalytic converter pipe to the right (rear) exhaust manifold.
30. Install the oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (without Oil Cooler).
31. Connect electrical harness connectors to the following:
- The knock sensor
- The heated oxygen sensor
- The crankshaft position sensor
- The starter motor
- The A/C compressor
- The wiring harness grounds
32. Lower the vehicle.
33. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
34. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right) and/or Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left).
35. Install the hood panel. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body and Frame.
36. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
37. Return the washer reservoir to the proper position.
38. Install the underhood accessory wiring junction block.
39. Install the washer reservoir bolts and retainers.
40. Install the air cleaner assembly.
41. Fill the engine with engine with oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (without Oil Cooler).
42. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
43. Fill the power steering system. Refer to Refilling the Power Steering System in Steering.
44. Check for leaks.
