Clutch Release Fork: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure^ Tools Required
- J 37973 Clutch Release Outer Bushing Remover
- J 37158-A Clutch Shaft Inner Bushing Remover
1. Remove the transaxle assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Transaxle Assembly Removal.
2. Remove the clutch release shaft return spring (1) from the clutch release shaft fork (2).
3. Remove the clutch release bearing pin and the clutch release bearing from the transaxle input shaft sleeve.
4. Remove the clutch release shaft cover from the clutch release shaft.
5. Remove the clutch release shaft seal and the clutch release shaft upper bushing from the transaxle case using the J 37973.
6. Remove the clutch release shaft (2) from the transaxle case.
7. Remove the clutch release shaft lower bushing (1) from the transaxle case using the J37158-A.
Inspection Procedure
^ Inspect the transaxle input shaft sleeve for scoring or other damage. If the sleeve is excessively worn or damaged, replace the transaxle case.
^ Inspect the clutch release shaft return springs for cracks or weakness. Replace if necessary.
^ Inspect the clutch release shaft for distortion or damage. Replace if necessary.
Installation Procedure

- J 37159 Clutch Shaft Inner Bushing Installer
- J 36190 Driver Handle
1. Install the clutch release shaft lower bushing (1) into the transaxle case using the J 37159 with the J 36190.
2. Install the clutch release shaft into the transaxle case.
3. Install the manual transaxle assembly into the vehicle. Refer to Transaxle Assembly Installation.
4. Lubricate the inside of the clutch release shaft upper bushing and clutch release shaft seal with GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent.
5. Install the clutch release shaft upper bushing and the clutch release shaft seal into the transaxle case using the J 37973.
6. Stake (2) the transaxle case against the clutch release shaft seal (3) at the 2 points.
7. Install the clutch release shaft cover onto the clutch release shaft.
8. Lubricate the clutch release bearing with a thin coat of GM P/N 1051344, or equivalent.
9. Install the clutch release shaft return spring (1) to the clutch release shaft fork (2).
10. Install the transaxle assembly into the vehicle. Refer to Transaxle Assembly Removal.
