Valve Body and Accumulators

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Place a drain pan or a suitable container under the transaxle fluid pan.

4. Allow the transaxle to cool, if necessary. Remove the transaxle drain plug from the transaxle fluid pan after the transaxle has cooled. Drain the transaxle fluid.
5. Remove the following components from the transaxle:
^ The 15 bolts

Important: Note the position of the 2 bolts with the cross-recessed heads for proper installation.

^ The transaxle fluid pan guard (2)
^ The fluid pan (3)
^ The fluid pan gasket

6. Disconnect the direct clutch (2) and the second brake solenoid (1) electrical connectors from the direct clutch and second brake solenoids.

7. Remove the forward clutch accumulator and the second brake fluid pipes (2) from the lower valve body.
8. Remove the Throttle Valve (TV) cable from the throttle valve cam.

9. Remove 6 bolts (2) and the fluid filter screen from the lower valve body (1).
10. Remove 11 bolts and the valve body from the transaxle.

11. Cover the accumulator bores with a cloth. Slowly apply low pressure compressed air into the fluid pressure passage in order to remove the forward clutch (2) and the second brake (1) accumulators from the transaxle case.

Installation Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J 36850 Transjel(R) Transmission Assembly Lubricant

Notice: Torque sequence and specification is very important to valve body operation. If bolts are tightened at random, valve bores may become distorted and inhibit valve operation. Make sure all parts are thoroughly cleaned and free of damage prior to installation.

Notice: When installing valve body to case, make sure accumulators and springs are in their correct positions and all valve body bolts are installed according to length and position. All bolts should be hand-tightened only. Do not use air powered tools when installing the valve body.

1. Apply J 36850 to the forward clutch and the second brake accumulator seals.
2. Install the forward clutch and the second brake accumulators in their respective case bores.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the valve body assembly to the transaxle case aligning the manual valve (2) with the shift lever pin (1). Secure the assembly with 2 valve body reamer bolts (4, 5) and 9 valve body bolts (6, 7, 8).

Tighten the bolts in a diagonal pattern as shown in the figure to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
4. Install the fluid filter screen to the lower valve body (1). Secure with 6 bolts.
Tighten the fluid filter screen bolts to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).

5. Install the Throttle Valve (TV) cable to the throttle valve cam (1).
6. Install the forward clutch accumulator and the second brake fluid pipes into the lower valve body making sure the pipes are securely seated.

7. Install the direct clutch (2) and the second brake solenoid (1) electrical connectors.
8. Install the new fluid pan gasket, the fluid pan, and the fluid pan guard to the transaxle. Secure the items with 15 bolts. Refer to AT Fluid/Filter Changing.
Tighten the transaxle fluid pan bolts to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).
9. Apply GM P/N 12346004, or the equivalent, to the threaded portion of the transaxle drain plug.
10. Install the transaxle drain plug into the transaxle fluid pan.
Tighten the transaxle drain plug to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
11. Remove the drain pan from under the transaxle fluid pan.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Connect the negative (-) battery cable.
14. Refill the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure.
