Steering Wheel: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURE- Tools Required
J 11859-A Steering Wheel Puller
CAUTION: Refer to SIR Handling Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR).
CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the inflator module. Refer to Infl Rst Steering Wheel Module Replacement in Air Bags and Seat Belts.
4. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut from the shaft.
5. Scribe an alignment mark (1,2) across the wheel and the steering shaft in order to ease the installation.
6. Install a J 1859-A steering wheel puller to the steering wheel (1).
7. Remove the steering wheel (1) from the steering shaft.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
IMPORTANT: When installing the steering wheel, the 2 lugs on the SIR coil must line up with the 2 grooves on the back side of the steering wheel. If this alignment is not correct the SIR coil will be damaged when the steering wheel turns.
1. Install the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Ensure that the alignment marks (1,2) on the steering wheel and the steering shaft match correctly.
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Secure the steering wheel to the steering shaft with the steering wheel retaining nut.
Tighten the steering wheel retaining nut to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the inflator module. Refer to Infl Rst Steering Wheel Module Replacement in Air Bags and Seat Belts.
4. Connect the negative battery cable.
5. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Air Bags and Seat Belts.
