Valve Cover: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Remove the secondary (spark plug) wire retaining clamp bolts from the cylinder head cover.
4. Remove the cylinder head cover nuts and the seal washers that are located under the nuts.





5. Remove the cylinder head cover (1) from the cylinder head.
6. Remove the cylinder head cover gasket from the cylinder head.

Installation Procedure

NOTICE: Be sure not to block the oil drain hole located at the front cylinder head opening-with the silicone sealant, This could cause excessive oil pressure within the cylinder head, resulting in a possible oil leak.

1. Apply a small amount of GM P/N 12346240 or equivalent, to the corners of the new cylinder head cover gasket.





2. Install the new cylinder head cover gasket to the cylinder head cover (1).
3. Install the cylinder head cover to the cylinder head.

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Secure the cylinder head cover with the new seal washers and the nuts.
Tighten the cylinder head cover nuts to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).
5. Install the secondary (spark plug) wire retaining clamps (2) to the cylinder head cover. Secure the wire retaining clamps with two bolts.
Tighten the wire retaining clamp bolts to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.)
6. Install the air cleaner assembly.
7. Connect the negative battery cable.
