Rear Knuckle: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

- Tools Required
- J 42188 Ball Joint Separator





1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lift Points.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
3. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
4. Disconnect the Real Time Dampening (RTD) position sensor link, if equipped.
5. Remove the shock absorber solenoid electrical connector, if equipped.
6. Remove the brake caliper and brake rotor. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement - Rear and Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear in Disc Brakes.
7. Separate the outer tie rod end from the suspension knuckle. Refer to Tie Rod Replacement (Outer End).





8. Remove the spindle nut retainer and washer. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
9. Separate the suspension knuckle (2) from the upper control arm (1). Refer to Rear Axle Upper Control Arm Replacement.
10. Separate the suspension knuckle (2) from the lower control arm ball joint stud (4). Refer to Rear Axle Lower Control Arm Replacement.
11. Remove the suspension knuckle.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE





1. Install the suspension knuckle (2) to the lower control arm (4) ball joint stud. Refer to Rear Axle Lower Control Arm Replacement.
2. Install the suspension knuckle ball joint stud (2) to the upper control arm (1). Refer to Rear Axle Upper Control Arm Replacement.
3. Install the spindle nut, washer and retainer. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.





4. Install the outer tie rod end to the suspension knuckle. Refer to Tie Rod Replacement (Outer End).
5. Install the brake rotor and caliper. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear and Brake Caliper Replacement - Rear in Disc Brakes.
6. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
7. Install the shock absorber solenoid electrical connector, if equipped.
8. Connect the real time dampening position sensor link, if equipped.
9. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
Lower the vehicle.
Perform a rear wheel alignment. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment (Rear) in Wheel Alignment.
