Power Steering Gear Replacement
REMOVAL PROCEDURE- Tools Required
- J 42188 Ball Joint Separator
1. Place a drain pan under the vehicle and drain the power steering fluid.
2. Disconnect the [1][2]intermediate shaft lower coupling from the power steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Column-Tilt.
3. Disconnect the power steering pump inlet hose (2) from the power steering gear.
4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lift Points.
5. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
6. Disconnect the power steering cooler pipe from the gear.
7. Remove the power steering cooler from the vehicle.
8. Disconnect both outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Tie Rod End Replacement - Outer - On Vehicle.
9. Disconnect the electrical connector for Magnasteer(R).
10. Remove the stabilizer shaft from the crossmember. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.
11. Disconnect the wiring harness clips from the crossmember.
12. Disconnect the brake pipe from the crossmember fastener clips.
13. Remove the steering gear mounting bolts and nuts.
14. Using hand tools only, LOOSEN, Do Not Remove the four crossmember mounting nuts 10 mm (0.394 inch).
15. Remove the power steering gear from the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening by rotating.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the power steering gear to the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening.
2. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts and nuts.
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
- Tighten the power steering gear mounting nuts to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the crossmember mounting nuts.
- Using hand tools only, tighten the crossmember mounting nuts to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
4. Fasten the brake pipe to the crossmember fastener clips.
5. Install the stabilizer shaft to the vehicle. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.
6. Connect both outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Tie Rod End Replacement -Outer- On Vehicle.
7. Connect the [1][2]intermediate shaft lower coupling to the power steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Column-Tilt.
8. Connect the electrical connector for Magnasteer(R).
9. Connect the wiring harness clips to the crossmember.
10. Install the power steering cooler to the crossmember.
11. Connect the power steering cooler fitting to the power steering gear.
- Tighten the power steering cooler fitting to the power steering gear to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
12. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) to the power steering gear.
Hold the hose against the steering gear while tightening the fitting.
- Tighten the power steering gear inlet hose fitting to the power steering gear to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
13. Remove the drain pan.
14. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
15. Lower the vehicle.
16. Install the [1][2]intermediate shaft shield.
- Tighten the [1][2]intermediate shaft shield clamp to 3.5 Nm (32 inch lbs.).
17. Refill the power steering fluid reservoir.
18. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding Power Steering System.
19. Check and adjust the front wheel toe setting. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment in Wheel Alignment.
20. Perform the SWPS plausibility test. Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Plausibility Test in ABS Brakes.
