Coolant Reservoir: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J38185 Hose Clamp Pliers

Caution: With a pressurized cooling system, the coolant temperature In the radiator can be considerably higher than the boiling point of the solution at atmospheric pressure. Removal of the surge tank cap, while the cooling system is hot and under high pressure, causes the solution to boll instantaneously with explosive force. This will cause the solution to spew out over the engine, the fenders, and the person removing the cap. Serious bodily injury may result.

Notice: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL(R) or HAVOLINE(R) DEX-COOL(R) coolant. If Coolant other than DEX-COOL(R) or HAVOLINE(R) DEX-COOL(R) is added to the system the engine coolant will require change sooner at 50,000 km (30,000 miles) or 24 months.

1. Drain the cooling system.





2. Remove the surge tank hose clamps.
3. Remove the hoses at the surge tank.
4. Disconnect the coolant level sensor connector.





5. Remove the surge tank nuts.
6. Remove the surge tank.

Installation Procedure
1. Install the surge tank.

Important: When installing the surge tank make sure the lower stud is fully seated in the lower bottle slot.





2. Install the lower surge tank nut.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the two upper surge tank nuts.
^ Tighten the surge tank nuts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





4. Install the hoses to the surge tank.
5. Install the surge tank hose clamps.
6. Connect the coolant level sensor connector.
7. Fill the cooling system.
