Removal Procedure- Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
- J 35944-A Oil Cooler Flushing Tool
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the intake air duct.
3. Remove the TV cable, if equipped.
4. Remove the shift cable and the bracket.
5. Remove the vacuum lines.
6. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
7. Install the J 28467-360 to the transmission.
8. Remove the top transmission to engine bolts.
9. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
10. Remove both of the front tire and wheel assemblies.
11. Remove the left splash shield.
12. Remove both of the front ABS wheel speed sensors and the harness from the left suspension support.
13. Remove both of the lower ball joints.
14. Remove the stabilizer shaft links.
15. Remove the front air deflector.
16. Remove both of the drive axles.
17. Remove the engine to transmission brace.
18. Remove the transmission converter cover bolts.
19. Remove the transmission converter cover.
20. Remove the starter.
21. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
22. Remove the transmission cooler pipes.
23. Remove the ground wires from the engine to transmission bolt.
24. Remove the cooler pipe brace.
25. Remove the exhaust brace.
26. Remove the bolts from the engine and transmission mount.
27. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
28. Remove the transmission mount to body bolts.
29. Remove the heater core hose pipe brace to transmission nut and bolt.
30. Remove the remaining transmission to engine bolts.
31. Remove the transmission assembly.
32. Flush the transmission cooler and the lines with the J 35944-A, or equivalent, whenever the transmission has been removed for overhaul or replacement.
Installation Procedure
1. Place a thin film of grease GM P/N 1051344, or equivalent, on the torque converter pilot knob.
2. Properly seat the torque converter in the oil pump.
3. Install the transmission assembly into position with a jack, while installing the right drive axle.
4. Install the lower engine to transmission bolts in the proper location.
5. Install the transmission mount to body bolts.
6. Install the engine to transmission mount bolts.
7. Install the exhaust brace.
8. Install the cooler pipe brace.
9. Install the ground wires at the engine to transmission bolt.
10. Install the transmission cooler pipes.
11. Apply adhesive/sealant compound GM P/N 12345493, or equivalent on the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
12. Install the converter cover bolts.
13. Install the transmission converter cover.
14. Install the starter.
15. Install the engine to transmission brace.
16. Install the drive axles.
17. Install the front air deflector.
18. Install the stabilizer shaft links.
19. Install the lower ball joints.
20. Connect both of the ABS wheel speed sensors.
21. Install the left splash shield.
22. Install the heater core pipe brace nut and the bolt.
23. Install both of the tire and the wheel assemblies.
24. Lower the vehicle.
Important: Install the bolts in the proper location.
25. Install the top engine to transmission bolts in their proper location.
26. Remove the J 28467-360 from the transmission.
27. Connect the electrical connections.
28. Install the vacuum lines.
29. Install the shift cable and the bracket.
30. Install the TV cable, if equipped.
31. Install the intake air duct.
32. Connect the negative battery cable.
33. Fill the transmission with the proper fluid.
34. Adjust the TV cable.
35. Adjust the shift linkage.
