Rattle Type Noise from Lower Center Instrument Panel Cover (Replace Cover)

1999 Chevrolet Cavalier

1999 Toyota Cavalier

Condition

Some owners of early production vehicles may comment that there is a rattle type noise or sound coming from the cover located in the lower center of the instrument panel. This cover or panel is used on all vehicles.

Cause
The condition may be caused by incorrect clearances between the cover and the radio support bracket and between the cover and the bushing tracks or channels.

Correction
A new cover has been developed that has improved clearances. Install a new cover using the following service procedure.
1. Carefully insert a small, flat-bladed tool (such as a screwdriver) between the right side of the cover and the lower instrument panel.
2. Carefully pry the right side of the cover out of the pin on the lower instrument panel.
3. Carefully pry the left side of the cover out of the pin on the lower instrument panel.
4. 4. Pull the rear of the cover down and to the rear in order to remove the cover from the guides.
5. Position the new cover on the guides. Push the cover forward.
6. Snap the left side of the cover into the pin on the left side of the instrument panel.
7. Snap the right side of the cover into the pin on the right side of the instrument panel.
