Replacement

TOOL REQUIRED
J 37096 Camshaft and Intermediate Shaft Sprocket Removal Tool

REMOVAL
1. Remove the camshaft tensioner actuator mounting bracket.
2. Remove the camshaft timing belt. Note the rotation of the belt for installation.
3. Remove the camshaft timing belt idler pulleys.





4. Remove the front engine lift bracket.
5. Remove both of the cooling fans. See Cooling System.
6. Remove the engine coolant hoses from the water pump. See Cooling System.
7. Remove the heater pipe retaining screws from the frame. See Heating and Air Conditioning.
8. Remove the starter motor. See Starting and Charging.
9. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
10. Remove the generator and lay it aside. See Starting and Charging.





11. Remove the oil filter.
12. Remove the engine oil cooler.
13. Remove the oil pan front retaining nuts and bolts.
14. Loosen the remaining oil pan bolts.
15. Remove the A/C compressor and lay it aside. See Heating and Air Conditioning.





16. Remove the lower front cover bolts.
17. Install the Camshaft and Intermediate Shaft Sprocket Removal Tool into position.
18. Lower the vehicle.
19. Remove the intermediate shaft belt sprocket.
20. Remove the forward lamp relay center screws. Position the relay center aside.
21. Remove the water pump pulley. See Cooling System.
22. Remove the upper front cover bolts.
23. Remove the front cover.
24. Remove the gasket.
25. Clean the mating surfaces of the front cover and the cylinder block.
26. Clean the sealing surfaces with degreaser.

INSTALLATION
1. Install the new gasket. Do not damage the sealing surfaces.
2. Apply GM sealer P/N 1052080 or equivalent to the lower edges of the sealing surface of the front cover.
3. Install the front cover.
4. Apply thread sealant GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent to the cover bolts.
5. Install the upper front cover bolts.
6. Tighten the bolts enough to pull the front cover against the engine block.
7. Install the water pump pulley. See Cooling System.
8. Install the oil cooler coolant hose at the front engine cover.
9. Install the forward lamp-relay center screws.
10. Install the upper alternator retaining bolts. See Starting and Charging.
11. Install the intermediate drive shaft sprocket.
12. Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle.
13. Install the remaining front cover retaining bolts.
^ Tighten the large front cover retaining bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the small front cover retaining bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
14. Install the oil pan retaining bolts.
15. Install the crankshaft balancer.
16. Install the generator. See Starting and Charging.
17. Install the starter motor. See Starting and Charging.
18. Install the A/C compressor. See Heating and Air Conditioning.
19. Install the engine oil cooler.
20. Install the engine oil cooler hoses.
21. Install the oil filter.
22. Lower the vehicle.
23. Install the heater pipe bracket retaining screws at the frame. See Heating and Air Conditioning.
24. Install both of the engine cooling fans. See Cooling System.
25. Install the front engine lift bracket.
26. Install the camshaft timing belt idler pulleys.
27. Install the camshaft timing belt.
28. Check the rotation of the camshaft timing belt.
29. Install the camshaft timing belt tensioner mounting bracket.
