Ignition Coil: Service and Repair

Ignition Coil Housing:

Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11 pin harness connector.
3. Remove the ignition coil and the electronic ignition control module assembly to cam housing bolts.
4. Remove the ignition coil and electronic ignition control module assembly from the engine.
5. Remove the housing to cover screws (7).
6. Remove the housing (6) from the cover (1).
7. Disconnect the coil harness connectors (4).
8. Remove the coil(s) (5), contact(s), and seal(s) from the cover (1).

Installation Procedure
1. Install the coil(s) (5) to the cover (1).
2. Connect the coil harness connectors (4).
3. Install the seals to housing (replace with new seals).
4. Install the contacts to housing (use petroleum Jelly to retain).
5. Install the housing (6) to the cover (1).
6. Install the housing to cover screws (7).

Tighten
^ Tighten the screws 4 Nm (35 lb. in.).

7. Install the spark plug boots (8) and the retainers (9) to the housing.
8. Install the ignition coil and electronic ignition control module assembly to the engine while carefully aligning the boots to the spark plug terminals.

Important: ICM cover bolts must be installed with isolator washers with the rubber side facing down.

9. Install the ignition coil and the electronic ignition control module assembly to cam housing bolts after coating the threads with P/N 1052080.

Tighten
^ Tighten the bolts to 22 Nm (16 lb. Ft.).

10. Connect the electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11 pin harness connector.
11. Connect the negative battery cable.
