Side Bearing Race and Shim Assemble
^ Tools Required:- J 42155 Differential Case Lifting Tool
- J 42168-2 Gauge Block
- J 42168-5 Gauge Plate
- J 42168-6 Gauge Block
- J 42168-7 Depth Gauge
- J 42168- 11 Gauge Assembly
- J 42168-12 Plug
- J 42172 Bearing Race Installer
1. Install J 42168-2 and J 42168-12 in the drive pinion location in the differential carrier. Place J 42168-7 on the flat of J 42168-2.
2. Place the tip of J 42168-7 plunger on the bottom of the bearing bore in the differential carrier. Tighten the set screw to lock the plunger in place.
3. Install J 42168-6 on J 42168-5 with the proper gear ratio step closest to the outer edge.
4. Place J 42168-5.
5. Place the ring gear and case assembly on J 42168-5.
6. Remove J 42168-7.
7. Using a feeler gauge measure the distance between the plunger tip of J 42168-7 J 42168-6. This is the shim thickness required if the ring gear has a zero (0) stamped on the side.
Important: If the ring gear has a plus (+) or minus (-) number stamped on the side, the shim thickness must be adjusted by that amount.
8. Remove the J 42168-2 and the J 42168-12.
9. Install the left side shim pack.
10. Install the left side outer bearing race using J 42172.
11. Install the ring gear and case assembly in the differential carrier using J 42155. Place axle assembly in fixture J 42173. Install the right side differential cover and the right side differential cover bolts.
- Tighten The bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
NOTICE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
12. Position J 8001 onto the end of the right axle shaft (1).
13. Grasp output shaft (1) and move shaft up and down to measure total travel using J 8001. Add 0.1 mm (0.004 in) to measurement. This is the shim size.
14. Remove the right side outer bearing race using J 42194 and a hydraulic press.
15. Install the right side shim pack in the right side differential cover.
16. Install the right side outer bearing race using J 42172 and a hydraulic press.
17. Remove the ring gear and case assembly from the differential carrier using J 42155.
